Nintendo is blocking the upcoming release of the Dolphin emulator on Steam. Initially the emulator for Nintendo Wii and GameCube games was set to become available on Steam in Q2 2023. The release has now been delayed 'indefinitely'.
In legal notice directed to Steam parent company Valve viewed by PCGamer Nintendo says the Dolphin emulator violates the game manufacturer's intellectual property rights and therefore should be removed from the Steam store. Nintendo hereby invokes its rights under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DMCA. Valve subsequently removed Dolphin's Steam page from the platform.
Dolphin reports on his blog that the release on Steam has now been postponed 'indefinitely'. "We are currently exploring our options and will provide a more in-depth response in the near future." The release of the Dolphin emulator on Steam would allow older Nintendo games from the Wii and GameCube era to be played in higher resolution on PC and the Steam Deck. Users must have legal copies of these classic Nintendo games.
